The history of the Rathore clan in Rajasthan is deeply intertwined with their devotion to Maa Nagnechiya. From the establishment of the kingdom to modern times, the goddess has served as the spiritual pillar of the dynasty.
The Migration of the Deity
Rao Duhad, the founder ruler, realized that a strong state requires the spiritual protection of its Kuldevi. His epic journey to Karnataka to bring the idol of Chakreshwari Devi established a permanent link. When the cart stopped in Nagana under the Neem tree, it defined the geographical heart of Rathore devotion.
Establishment of Branch Temples
As the Rathores founded new kingdoms across Central and Western India, they built temples to honor Maa Nagnechiya in their new capitals:
- Mehrangarh Fort: Built by Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur, in 1459.
- Junagarh Fort: Established by Rao Bika in Bikaner.
- Kishangarh & Ratlam: Royal shrines dedicated to the family deity.
Despite these majestic fort temples, the village of Nagana remains the primary pilgrimage site (Mool Peeth) where the original wooden idol stands.
